Drug Scouts
Drug Scouts is a drug prevention project active in the field of harm reduction. The objective of the project main activities include: intervention work at parties, counselling drug users, provide information on Substance Use and Harm Reduction via mail, internet, leaflets, phone and face to face. Drug Scouts is part of the NGO SZL Suchtzentrum gGmbH and is financed by its head organisation, the main financial source for Drug Scouts project via SZL Suchtzentrum is the youth council of the city of Leipzig. The project was founded in 1998 by people from the party scene.
Target group of the project are: (recreational) drug users between 18-27 years, affiliated persons (parents, teachers, social workers). Main objectives include: engage and intervene with hard-to-reach groups in order to enable them to recognize problematic patterns of drug use and ask for help if needed, sensitize drug users for risks that might be connected to the use of drugs, to ensure the access to harm reduction services in recreational settings, offer low threshold counselling services for recreational drug users. There are about 45 peers the “voluntscouts” who work for and with the project on a regular base. The volunteers are between 18 and 50 years old and have different backgrounds there are students of social work, pharmacist assistant, people who don’t have regular jobs, a psychotherapist. They all have in common that they like to go to parties and that they want to support people who take drugs to get to know about less risky ways of drug consumption and make people think about what they are doping.
